For this week’s nature challenge:
Find some evidence of beaver activity. First, you’ll need to locate a pond. Signs of beavers may be found along the banks within the water. Look for gnawing on small trees and saplings. Can you spot the “lodge” which is usually a mound of sticks, mud, and other vegetation? It almost seems like just a collection of debris but is a bit too organized to not have been purposefully put together. Other evidence would include tracks in the snow, a “slide” area for entering the water, and fecal pellets.
Although beavers are less active during the winter and tend to be nocturnal, you will still see signs of their presence during these months.
Challenge difficulty is rated as medium.
